Development of Network activities
for the South-North Peace
|
| ¤· |
Designation Jeju
as Island of Peace requires
Jeju Island to play an active
role in inter-Korean reconciliation
cooperation.
|
|
1) Jeju as the place where
South-North related summit was opened
|
| ¤· |
Since the early
of 1990s Jeju citizens has
insisted that Jeju is able
to be the best place of inter-Korean
talks to terminate cold war
and to search reconciliation
and peace.
|
| ¤· |
Jeju seems to have the least
interests contradiction as well
as symbolizes 'from Halla to Baekdu'.
From the beginning of 6.15 South-North
talks, Jeju has emerged as the
talks place of South-North talks,
so that it significantly contributed
to open the age of South-North
reconciliation cooperation. For
instances, a series of Jeju talks
such as South-North special envoy
talks(Sep.12, 2000), the 1st South-North
talks between Ministers of National
Defense(Sep.25-26, 2000), the
3rd North-South ministerial-level
talks(Sep.27-30, 2000) proved
that Jeju is the best place for
South-North talks. |
| ¤· |
The 17th North-South minister
level talks (Del, 13 ~ 16. 2005) |
| ¤· |
The 12th North-South economic
cooperation promotion committee. |
| ¤· |
There are requirements to use
Jeju as place of South-North interchange
and talks on regular basis. This
will highlight the image of "Jeju
as Island of Peace" |
|
2) Continuous aids of Jeju
agricultural products such as tangerines
|
 |
| ¤· |
From humanitarian
point of view Jeju has
performed 'Sending tangerines
to the North (Tangerine
Campaign)' since 1998,
when economic crisis
of IMF occurred in Korea.
It started to send 100
tons of tangerines in
1998 and the campaign
became a active civilian
movement. It had sent
total 49,226 tons including
36,226 tons of tangerines
and 13,000 tons of carrots
till Jan. 2005.
|
|
|
| ¤· |
Jeju citizens'
devotion and love, so called
Vitamin C Diplomacy, considerably
contributed to improve reconciliation
and peace between the South
and the North. Continuous
reconciliation activities
should be developed with the
governments' active supports
and solidarities with global
societies.

3) Jeju citizens' North Korea
Visits, total 3 times
|
 |
| ¤· |
Various
interchange cooperation
projects with North
Korea successively resulted
in Jeju citizens' North
Korea three visits in
large scale.
|
| ¤· |
The 1st group of Jeju
representative citizens
visited North Korea such
as Pyungyang, Mt. Baekdu,
Mt. Myohyang from May 10,
2002, for 5 nights and 6
days. The 2nd group of Jeju
citizens(257 people) visited
the North on November 2002.
The 3rd visit was done by
group of Jeju citizens(256
people) on Aug.25 to 30,
2003. |
|
|
4) "Inter-Korean Peace
Festival" as the one place of South-North
reconciliation and unity
|
| ¤· |
"Inter-Korean
Unity Peace Culture Festival(same
as Inter-Korean Peace Festival)"
under the slogan of 'We Koreans
meet' took place on Oct.23
to 27, 2003.
|
| ¤· |
"Inter-Korean Peace Festival"
was the place where both Koreans
had a pure meeting without considering
ideologies and systems. It brought
together two Koreas' reconciliation
and union, made sure of people
culture community, and contributed
to promote peace climate on Korean
Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
By bringing peace together on
Korean Peninsula and Northeast
Asia, it became a place of world
peace. |
|
5) "Halla-Baekdu"
Interchange Development
|
| ¤· |
At the 3rd Jeju
citizens' visit, they discussed
with North Koreans including
chiefs of Mt. Halla Institute
and Mt. Baekdu Institute about
future interchanges and agreed
with "Halla-Baekdu"
joint academic investigation.
|
| ¤· |
In addition, at the South-North
talks on Jun. 2000, "Halla-Baekdu
cross-sightseeing" was agreed
and Baekdu visit already started
but Halla visit wasn't yet. It
needs to be prepared. |
| ¤· |
Likewise, "Halla-Baekdu"
interchanges promotion will provide
another sense of oneness because
Mt.Baekdu and Mt.Hall are significant
symbols of two Koreas' unity formation. |
